Plan on about 1 ounce of tortilla chips per person for a light snack alongside other food, or 2 ounces when nachos or chips and dip are a bigger part of the meal. For 20 people, that’s 20–40 ounces: four to eight 5-ounce bags.
That’s a starting estimate. Adjust for appetites, how long people are staying, and what else you’re serving. A dinner party and an afternoon built around queso need different chip plans. [1]
How many bags of tortilla chips do you need?
| Guests | Light snack: 1 oz each | Bigger portions: 2 oz each |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 10 oz = 2 bags | 20 oz = 4 bags |
| 15 | 15 oz = 3 bags | 30 oz = 6 bags |
| 20 | 20 oz = 4 bags | 40 oz = 8 bags |
| 30 | 30 oz = 6 bags | 60 oz = 12 bags |
| 50 | 50 oz = 10 bags | 100 oz = 20 bags |
These are party-shopping estimates, not nutrition serving recommendations. The table doesn’t include backup bags; add those separately if you want a reserve.
What’s the calculation?
Guests × ounces per person ÷ ounces per bag = bags to buy.
Round up to a whole bag. For 18 guests at 2 ounces each, you need 36 ounces. Divide by 5 ounces per bag and you get 7.2—so plan on 8 bags before adding any backup.
Using a different bag size? Swap in its net weight. “One bag” doesn’t mean the same amount across every brand or package.
How much is in a 6-, 12-, or 18-pack?
For 5-ounce bags:
- 6 bags = 30 ounces.
- 12 bags = 60 ounces.
- 18 bags = 90 ounces.
Say you’re hosting 20 people and planning for 2 ounces each. You need 40 ounces. A six-pack falls short; a twelve-pack gives you 60 ounces, including 20 ounces beyond the estimate. Leave the reserve sealed until you need it.
For 50 people at that same estimate, you’d need 100 ounces. An eighteen-pack alone would be 10 ounces short.
Which flavors should you serve?
For chips and dip: the Vaca Dipping Pack combines Original and Zesty Lime, with three bags of each in the six-pack. Put them next to salsa and homemade guacamole.
For nachos: go with Vaca Original and let everyone choose their toppings. Our Original Nachos recipe gives you a straightforward starting point.
Should you open every bag at once?
Start with a few and open more as the bowls run low. You’ll see which flavor people reach for, and you won’t finish the night with every bag half-eaten.
If some guests want nachos and others want plain chips with dip, divide your total between them. No need to count the same guests twice.
How many people does one 5-ounce bag serve?
About five light-snack portions or two to three bigger portions using this range. For a crowd, calculate total ounces first, then round up the number of bags.
One less thing to figure out before everyone shows up. Pick up the Vaca Dipping Pack.
